Childhood

Each and everyone has a childhood past. We were all brought up differently and grew up in different types of environments. I remember very well when my mum would beat me up for eating food at my next door neighbors’ house. I mean back then food from someone elses’ home was way better than the food you eat at home. I don’t know if you can understand what I mean?

I remember this one time she called me out to come eat breakfast and there I was eating eggs, bacon, sausage, and baked beans with toast. The thought of leaving that food was beyond imagination. I tried to finish up but rather said to my friend let me just go find out what it is she wants. I placed my plate under the sink, but what I forgot to do was wipe the oil of my face.

You can only imagine what happened, I won’t forget how bad the outcome of that was. Then it seemed unfair to have to be beat up over food but the concept behind it was unclear to me because I was but a child. I was even given a nickname ‘mwana anoda kudya zvekumaraini’ which means ‘the child who loves eating next door’.

My punishment was to watch the smurfs the times I had to go play outside with the rest of the gang. I hated it so much, but funny enough it turned out to be the best cartoon. It helped me avoid going nextdoor to eat for it posed as an embarrassment to my mother. Till today this cartoon is the best because it holds back so much memories of how I had to learn to love food from my own home.
